Leonard Church isn't what he might tell you or even himself. He's an AI (artificial intellingence) stuck in a robot body that believes he was once human. (he wasn't but that doesn't stop Church) His body resembles than of armor used by Spartans from the Halo series. All that matters is that he uses it for his own body. He can also possess people for a short time by exciting his body and entering others. He comes from a series that has two box canyons in the middle of nowhere, one on each side. Church was made into the unofficial leader after their captain died on an aspiran overdose. So they were stuck there for a long time. And such began Red vs Blue.
